e.18 Defamiliarizing New YorkFabrication, Print

Defamiliarizing New York was one of my first forays into printed matters. I wanted to make a booklet to accompany one of my favorite holidays, the Winter Solstice. I made a limited edition of 6 copies of the book to hand out to different folks in my life. The book asked people to engage in a series of questions and prompts surrounding rituals and holidays, using defamiliarization as a reference point for each question. Defamiliarization is a process by which familiar things are described in different terms than usual to make their appearance novel once more. I chose a runic aesthetic for the book, wanting to incite some feelings of an old tradition coming from a snowy land.

The book is separated into six sections:
  • Preface
  • People
  • Rituals
  • Shedding/Hibernating
  • Warm/Cold
  • Reflections

Each section asks different questions, and there are pages in between for participants to write down answers in words or drawings. Childlike whimsy was strongly encouraged.
